Police reported they were contacted by a man who noticed a car in Hanau marked with reddish substance

Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.

An important official stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
